Research Interests
My primary research interests are the mechanisms by which external stimuli and the internal clock activate arousal systems. My approach has involved in vitro whole-cell patch-clamp and in vivo single unit neurophysiology, neuroanatomy and EEG monitoring of sleep and wakefulness in rats and mice.
Prior to joining the Division of Sleep Medicine, I described a role for hypothalamic orexin neurons in the regulation of locus coeruleus circadian activity and the effects of inhaled anesthetics. Currently, I am using novel social and environmental stimuli to study how arousal areas can override the circadian and homeostatic sleep drive.
