Research Interests

My research goals are directed at discovering the mechanisms underlying the relationship between sleep deficiency and pain processing, with a focus on inflammatory networks.  My long term goal is to identify key inflammatory pathways or signatures affected by sleep deficiency that serve the development of interventions to prevent inflammatory alterations and related abnormalities in pain processing when exposed to sleep deficiency. I have developed and implemented complex and lengthy experimental models of sleep deficiency in order to mimic sleep patterns that are highly common in society, such as the repeated exposure to restricting sleep on weekdays and catching-up on sleep over the weekend, or patterns of recurrent sleep disruption. Testing the effects of more chronic (rather than acute) forms of sleep deficiency allows to determine to which degree the immune and other biological systems can adapt to sleep deficiency, which is critical information in understanding how sleep deficiency in the long term affects health, and in particular increases chronic pain vulnerability. In addition, my work further focuses on recovery options, such as how much recovery sleep is needed to reinstate inflammatory balance.
