Sleep Deprivation Hurts Workers, So Why Does Our Culture Encourage It?

December 4, 2013

In a video from the Huffington Post Live HMS DSM researchers Russell Sanna, Ph.D., Stuart Quan, M.D., and Charles Czeisler, M.D., Ph.D. recently discussed the workplace culture that encourages workers to forgo sleep and the dangers caused by sleep deprived workers. Sleep deprivation can lead to accidents such as the recent train derailment in New York in which the train's engineer may have nodded off shortly before the accident. The researchers discuss how changes in workplace practices and cultural attitudes to encourage people to get enough sleep can help prevent accidents and save lives.
