Boston Globe: "Operating Over the Limit"

In an op-ed piece, Dr. Czeisler describes how some Massachusetts teaching hospitals still schedule residents to work 8 shifts of 30 straight hours or more per month, "despite hazards to patient safety and mounting evidence that sleep plays an essential role in learning". Last December the Institute of medicine concluded that long shifts without sleep impaired performance and increased mistakes, surgical complications, and fatigue related injuries and death for resident physicians.
