Division of Sleep Medicine @ Harvard Medical School
Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine
Each spring since 2003, the Division of Sleep Medicine has held a day of events to celebrate and highlight the field of sleep medicine, bringing together the Harvard sleep community.
On Wednesday, June 4th, the Division of Sleep Medicine awarded the 2008 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine to two scientists who have made extraordinary lifetime scientific contributions to the field of Sleep Medicine:
Alexander A. Borbély, MD, Professor of Pharmacology in the Medical Faculty at University of Zurich, Switzerland,
and
Richard E. Kronauer, PhD, Gordon McKay Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Emeritus, at Harvard University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

A Special Session of Sleep Grand Rounds, "Temporal Dynamics of Circadian Resetting by Light; No end of Surprises", was presented by Richard E. Kronauer, PhD.
In the afternoon, Division faculty, trainees and guests gathered to view the 40 posters presented by HMS DSM trainees and junior faculty at the sixth annual Division of Sleep Medicine Poster Session.
That same evening, Alexander A. Borbély, MD provided the keynote address at the sixth annual Faculty Dinner and Award Ceremony, “Processes and mechanisms: Looking back on 40 years of sleep research.”
The annual Peter C. Farrell Lecture and Prize in Sleep Medicine, and Division of Sleep Medicine Poster Session and Faculty Dinner, are milestones toward the establishment of a permanent presence for circadian and sleep medicine within Harvard Medical School.
Bringing together faculty, fellows and students in the Harvard sleep community, these events aim to further the understanding and study of sleep, and the recognition of its importance as one of the three pillars of health. This event also honors Dr. Peter C. Farrell’s lifelong commitment to the field of sleep medicine.
