Research Interests
The broad goal of my research is to better understand the cardiovascular complications of obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by repeated obstructions of the upper airway leading to intermittent hypoxia and recurrent sympathetic surges during sleep. OSA is emerging as an independent risk factor for hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders.
The goal of my current research is identify which mechanisms are important in linking OSA to the development of cardiovascular disease. Currently, I am assessing several cardiovascular biomarkers is a cohort of individuals with and without OSA matching for obesity. In addition, I am studying what happens to these cardiovascular biomarkers before and after treatment of OSA. This work is currently funded by the National Sleep Foundation’s Pickwick Fellowship. I have recently completed the clinical portion of my Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship and am now board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care. Currently, I am training in clinical sleep medicine at SleepHealth Centers affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
