Research Interests

Dr. Gompf’s primary research interests are the mechanisms by which external stimuli and the internal clock activate arousal systems.  His approach has involved in vitro whole-cell patch-clamp and in vivo single unit neurophysiology, neuroanatomy and EEG monitoring of sleep and wakefulness in rats and mice.

Prior to joining the Division of Sleep Medicine, he described a role for hypothalamic orexin neurons in the regulation of locus coeruleus circadian activity and the effects of inhaled anesthetics.  Currently, he is using novel social and environmental stimuli to study how arousal areas can override the circadian and homeostatic sleep drive.
