Research Interests

My research is focused on characterizing the neuronal substrates of ultradian (e.g., REM), circadian and homeostatic control systems, including the circuitry driving cortical arousal.  I am interesting in elucidating the mechanisms of integration of homeostatic, circadian, emotional and cognitive inputs for behavioral state control, including sleep-wake regulation. Investigative approaches include chronic telemetry, ISH, RTqPCR, microarrays, IHC, behavioral recordings, modeling, neuronal tracers, neurotoxic lesions, genetically modified mice, and viral vectors (adenoassociated virus, AAV) for focal deletion/delivery of genes.
