Research Interests

My research interest focuses on the impact of sleep quantity and quality on emotional and physical well-being, in particular pain experiences, and whether inflammatory processes link the association between sleep and pain. We study the sleep-pain relationship in experimental models of prolonged partial sleep deprivation and total sleep deprivation, and will shortly begin testing pain thresholds in patients suffering from primary insomnia. In addition to the impact of insufficient sleep on the analgesic and inflammatory system, I am interested in whether improvement of sleep quantity and quality has a beneficial influence on different systems. Currently, we are testing whether sleep extension lowers blood pressure and inflammatory markers.
