Research Interests
Research in the laboratory investigates the mechanisms responsible for the decline in sleep with aging. Using state-of-the art gene chip technology we have probed changes in 8,800 genes in a region of the brain responsible for arousal. We find that with aging there is a breakdown in the expression of genes critical for neuronal activity. Current effort is to implement an intervention, such as exercise, to block the cell death cascade. We find that exercise can increase arousal, normalize sleep and increase the activity of key EEG frequencies associated with cognitive function. Most interestingly, these changes persist for several weeks after exercise has ended. This simple intervention provides hope that exercise, even when it is started for the first time late in life, can improve quality of life. We recommend that exercise be started during the teenage years, and continue throughout life as a means of combating obesity and improving sleep and cognition.
