Job Opportunities
Research Assistant in Sleep Laboratory
Department of Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital
February 1, 2008Candidates are invited to apply for the full-time position of research assistant in the MGH Sleep Laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Ellenbogen. This job offers the opportunity to be involved at all levels of human research, working directly with researchers, sleep technicians and participants in the studies. The research topics are focused primarily on the influences of sleep on cognition. Tasks include participation in research design, implementation and data collection and general lab management.
This position offers excellent research experience for anyone wishing to pursue a career in academic medicine, biomedical engineering or basic science research (particularly psychology/cognitive neuroscience).
Our lab investigates the neural and cognitive components of human sleep and sleep disorders. Our research focuses on the interaction between cognition and sleep. For example, does sleep influence memory? And if so, what are the electrophysiologic signatures? Can the influence of sleep on memory be manipulated by drugs or devices? What are the best ways to measure sleep physiology? Can they be improved?
To examine these questions, our sleep laboratory employs a cognitive neuroscience and behavioral approach, looking at human performance (e.g. memory) and sleep parameters, including electrophysiologic measures of several organ systems, such as brain (EEG), heart (EKG), muscle (EMG); and lung (airflow and oxygenation).
A successful candidate for this research assistant position will be able to work with small groups or independently, be organized, motivated, reliable, proactive and enjoy the process of innovation in science. General computer skills (mac and pc) are essential, including proficiency in data management (e.g. excel). Programming skills (e.g. matlab) are desirable.
Hours are flexible. A two-year commitment is requested. Full-time employees receive full benefits, competitive salaries, and excellent resources for career development.
Interested candidates should email their CV to Dr. Ellenbogen via stramontozzi@partners.org or call 617.724.7426
